Academics

Taylor Media Center

jrds-24oct08-0294James River Day School believes that reading and information literacy are essential for academic success and lifelong learning.

JRDS also believes in the power of books to expand horizons and develop character. The Taylor Media Center seeks to cultivate enthusiasm for reading, an appreciation of libraries and the value of their resources, and the development of information literacy skills necessary for success in an information-rich environment. We believe that to achieve these goals requires the cooperation of librarians, teachers, administrators, and parents. Taylor Media Center seeks to encourage these partnerships. In addition, we strive to be a valuable resource for the entire James River Day School community.

Accelerated Reader Quizzes

At the Taylor Media Center, we follow a collection development policy that supports school-wide curriculum and provides for a wide range of literature choices. That means we...

  • take a proactive approach to meeting the information and reading needs of the school by providing a wide range of information and materials delivered through various media and appropriate for a wide range of age levels including teachers and parents.
  • facilitate, through the use of experiential methods, the learning of information literacy skills that allow students to locate, evaluate, analyze, and utilize information.
  • provide guidance in research and reading selection.
  • stay attuned to advances in library technology and explore ways they can be of service to the school.
  • publicize and generate enthusiasm for new acquisitions.
  • provide Accelerated Reader quizzes appropriate for the reading levels and goals of our students.
  • develop partnerships with faculty, administration, and parents.
  • recognize opportunities to promote reading through events for the whole school or by connecting the right book with the right student.
  • teach library etiquette.
  • make the Taylor Media Center an inviting and comfortable environment.
