Our end goal is that students graduating from JRDS will have the skills and knowledge to enjoy physical activity in group or individual settings. Students will take responsibility for developing and maintaining personal fitness goals to ensure an active lifestyle. In their pursuit of maintaining a physically active lifestyle, students will learn skills to accept consequences for success or failure, set realistic goals, and find acceptable solutions to problems. To enable our students to accomplish these things, we are introducing three themes (each theme highlights the PE department’s area of expertise). Please note: under each theme section, is the corresponding National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) content standard. There are a total of six standards and the three themes below. Read More ...
Yee-haw!!! The Reading Rodeo came! First Grade went western on Friday, April 23rd. Dressed in cowboy and cowgirl duds, the students played reading relay games by riding stick horses to a lasso filled with various word games. The "cowpokes" learned all about horses and experienced a live pony ride. Working up an appetite meant it was time for cooking our own vittles over the open fire and relaxing on hay bales. The afternoon featured tall tales and group "cowboy" skits. A rootin' tootin' good time was had by all!

In my general reading about education and schools, I find several technology-related themes that I believe are worth considering. First, today’s young adolescents are immersed in technology and use computers, iPods, and cell phones as easily as their parents and grandparents use watches, televisions, and telephones. Secondly, communication over the Internet or via e-mail and text-messaging is fast, easy and feels anonymous. Ironically, it is much less anonymous or private than face-to-face, real-time telephone, or hard-copy written communication. When we communicate on the Internet, we lose control over that communication the moment we push “send” or “share.” Third, while new technologies make information more available and communication faster, they don’t make people smarter.
