Giving to James River Day School

Every gift received by James River Day School supports our strong and innovative learning community.

Wreadingledgehether it further enhances our classroom resources, technology or academic programs, every gift made to the school does make a difference in the lives of our students and faculty.

Gifts to the Cardinal Fund support our school’s resources and programs such as academics, athletics, technology, faculty salaries, classroom supplies and equipment, financial aid and building upgrades. With tuition accounting for 80% of the school’s operating revenue, we need to bridge the gap between the cost of educating each child and the expenses not covered by tuition. Clearly, the Cardinal Fund is crucial to the school’s operation and helps us continue the highest educational standards for our students.

The Importance of Giving Back

by Connor Bell '05

I cannot drive by James River Day School without experiencing a bit of nostalgia. Although it often seems like more than five years have passed since my graduation, I still have many vivid JRDS memories (after all, I did spend nine years there): the character pledge in the mornings, PE, classroom and lunch table conversations, D.A.R.E., afternoon sports practices, home games, away games, locker room pep-talks. Hindsight has allowed me to view my JRDS experience holistically, and through that scope the school's abstract tenets of scholarship, leadership, and citizenship take on substantive meaning. Those principles were manifest in my everyday life as I was challenged and encouraged to be my best self, to appreciate and learn from my experiences and the people around me. The genuine care that teachers, coaches and other mentors had for the student body was always palpable. Yes, they were demanding, yet so approachable and motivating that the challenges they presented were a sort of invitation to an exciting odyssey. I felt grateful and proud to be a Cardinal, and I understood that the title carried the expectation to lead by exemplifying the qualities of a good citizen. I believe that I graduated from James River with the confidence and tools to succeed and also with an acute awareness that an individual never stands alone-he or she is the representative and steward of a community.

I am immensely thankful for the members of the James River community who share the school's passion for stewardship, as evidenced by their dedication to the Cardinal Fund. Their generosity afforded me a nine year experience that built the foundation for the rest of my life, and I hope that they will continue to provide such an opportunity for students in the future.

Connor is now a Freshman at Yale University.
